How to Set Up Headphones for AutoScrib

Virtual Audio Applications

To enable AutoScribe to record and transcribe audio from your device, you’ll need a virtual audio application.
Choose the one that matches your operating system:

  • Voicemeeter → for Windows users

  • BlackHole → for Mac users


How to Add Voicemeeter to Your Desktop (Windows)

Note: This process may require help from an IT professional or someone familiar with system audio settings.


STEP-BY-STEP SETUP

1️⃣ Download Voicemeeter
Go to https://vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/ and download the latest version.

2️⃣ Install the file (.exe)
Run the installer and follow the prompts.

3️⃣ Restart your computer
After installation, restart your desktop or laptop.

4️⃣ Open Voicemeeter
Launch it from the Start Menu.

5️⃣ Open the Menu
Click the Menu button in the header and set Communications → 0.

6️⃣ (Skip number corrected)
Select Options:
Enable the following:

  • System Tray

  • Run on Windows Startup

  • Auto Restart Audio Engine

7️⃣ Set Hardware #1
Set Hardware Input #1 to your microphone 🎤 (this is what you hear from).

8️⃣ Set Hardware Out
Set Hardware Out to the same microphone or headphones you are speaking through.

This should match your Hardware #1 setting.

9️⃣ Disable Echo
On the left-hand side, disable A to prevent echo .

🔟 Test Your Mic
Speak into your mic — the graphic bars should move , indicating that you’re being heard, but you should not hear yourself.

1️⃣1️⃣ Check Sound Settings
Make sure both your input and output devices are set to Voicemeeter in your system sound settings.


App Configuration References

Zoom

1️⃣ Click the up arrow (↑) next to the Microphone icon
2️⃣ Select Voicemeeter for both Microphone and Speaker

Google Meet

1️⃣ Click the 3 vertical dots ⋮Settings
2️⃣ Select Voicemeeter for both Microphone and Speaker

Skype

1️⃣ Click the up arrow (↑) next to the icon
2️⃣ Set Microphone → Voicemeeter Output
3️⃣ Set Speaker → Voicemeeter Input

You should now see bars moving in the Virtual Input area of Voicemeeter.


How to Add BlackHole to Your Mac


1. Set Up a Multi-Output Device (for Playback)

1️⃣ Open Audio MIDI Setup (use Spotlight to find it).
2️⃣ Click the + button → select Create Multi-Output Device.
3️⃣ In the right panel, check the boxes for:

  • BlackHole

  • Your headphones or speakers
    4️⃣ Right-click → Rename it (e.g., AutoScribe (output)).
    5️⃣ Right-click again → Use This Device for Sound Output.


2. Set Up an Aggregate Device (for Recording)

1️⃣ In Audio MIDI Setup, click + → select Create Aggregate Device.
2️⃣ Check boxes for:

  • BlackHole

  • Your microphone
    3️⃣ Right-click → Rename it (e.g., AutoScribe (input)).


3. Configure System Preferences

1️⃣ Go to System Preferences → Sound
2️⃣ Under Input, select AutoScribe (input)
3️⃣ Under Output, select AutoScribe (output)

This ensures:

  • You can hear system audio

  • AutoScribe can capture both your mic and system sound


4. Start Your Encounter

With everything configured:

  • Open AutoScribe

  • Click Start Listening

  • Test by playing audio (e.g., from YouTube) and speaking into your mic both should be captured.


Reverting Back

Once finished, go to:
System Preferences → Sound → and select your regular microphone and speaker/headphone output to restore your usual settings
